IFEN Trainings

At regular intervals, we offer in-service training courses for teachers from primary and secondary schools, which are recognised by IFEN (Institut de la formation de l’éducation nationale).

The topics of these training courses range from sustainable education to the teaching of competences in the field of various natural sciences.

Bats – Goblins of the night

Mammals that can fly at night? In Luxembourg, all 19 bat species are critically endangered. Why do bats have a negative reputation? Yet these creatures are very important bioindicators and are indispensable in our natural environment.

The first session of this workshop is aimed at C1-C3 teachers with bat activities and educational games. In the second and third sessions, we will experience a live outing of one of the most famous bat colonies in Luxembourg.

Mammals that can fly at night? In Luxembourg, all 19 bat species are critically endangered. Why do bats have a negative reputation? Yet these creatures are very important bioindicators and are indispensable in our natural environment.

The first session is aimed at C4 and secondary school teachers, where the subject matter is presented in an age-appropriate way using technical and scientific aids. In addition, practical work/exercises are tested that can be used in the classroom (e.g. working with a microscope and ultrasound detector, instructions for building a bat house, …).

In the second and third sessions, we experience a live excursion of one of the most famous bat colonies in Luxembourg.

Geodiversity in the Minett UNESCO Biosphere

Geodiversity, or geological diversity, encompasses the variety of rocks, minerals, fossils, soils, sediments and landforms. The geological processes that create and change these formations are also part of geodiversity.

The geological subsurface, whether loose or solid rock, has a direct influence on soil formation and thus on biodiversity. Geological diversity is therefore not only the abiotic equivalent of biodiversity, but also the basis for food production, water management and energy production, for example.

The Minett UNESCO Biosphere is used as an example to illustrate what geodiversity is, how diverse the subsoil of southern Luxembourg is, and what role geology has played in the economic development of the country and what it means for biodiversity today.
