Kick-off of the Biodiversity Days

This Wednesday, the 22nd of June, the Biodiversity Days kicked off at the Ellergronn. In collaboration with scientific staff from the National Museum of Natural History and IMS Luxembourg, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere offered employees from 10 different companies that are members of IMS Luxembourg the opportunity to gain an insight into the biodiversity of one of the core zones of Luxembourg’s only biosphere reserve.

The Ellergronn core zone, which is also one of the oldest nature reserves in the Grand Duchy, offers much to discover in terms of biodiversity. Be it in the wooded areas of the 110-hectare site, in the dry meadows found here or in the ponds and pools created by the collapse of old underground iron ore tunnels.

Thierry Helminger and Guy Colling from the National Museum of Natural History showed the participants of the first event of the Biodiversity Days how a biodiversity inventory is scientifically carried out.

After this inventory, the participants went on a short tour of the Ellergronn nature reserve, where they received information about the various habitats and the newly created Minett Trail, also passing through Ellergronn.

After the approximately two-hour discovery and explanation tour through the Ellergronn core zone of the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, the first day of the Biodiversity Days was concluded with a networking lunch.

The Biodiversity Days continue

On Friday, 8 classes from member municipalities of the PRO-SUD syndicate, which manages the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, will discover the natural richness of Luxembourg’s only biosphere reserve through various workshops, and on Sunday, the Nature and Forest Administration, together with the City of Esch-Alzette and the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, invite everyone to the traditional “En Dag an der Natur“, a family festival for young and old, during which everyone can discover the diversity of nature in the southern region, free of charge.
