During the preparations for Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture in 2020, the idea was born to install welcome signs on the access roads to the 11 Luxembourgish municipalities that were partners of Esch2022 and whose territory coincides with the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, to immediately inform visitors to the region that they are entering the territory of the European Capital of Culture.
After the end of Esch2022, the municipalities of Luxembourg’s only biosphere reserve wanted to continue to use this identity sign to inform visitors to the south of Luxembourg that our region is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

After working on the design of the new welcome signs and obtaining the necessary authorisation from the Administration des Ponts et Chaussées for the long-term installation of the signs, which were only to be installed along the roads in 2022, the replacement of the signs could begin in the last few days.
To conserve resources, the new welcome signs are the same size and orientation as the Esch2022 signs. As a result, not only the bases and frames have been reused, but also the signs themselves by simply covering them with the modified image.
The remaining missing signs will be replaced in the coming weeks, so that from this spring, visitors to the south of Luxembourg will be informed at 27 different locations that they are entering a biosphere reserve.
