Urban Sketches Minett

We introduce you to Malou Mathieu

Malou is an Urban Sketcher and is currently preparing a book of about 170 pages with drawings (sketches) of the Minett.

Recently she came to Ellergronn, where the Minett UNESCO Biosphere has its offices, to make some drawings. In this book about the Minett, drawings of industrial buildings, drawings of the architectural heritage of the Minett municipalities and drawings of the nature reserves originating from the former open-cast mines will show a complete picture of the region. Malou Mathieu came up with the idea of such a tribute to southern Luxembourg some time ago.

From an idea to the project

It was a multi-faceted idea, explains the artist. Initially, the book should have been produced in collaboration with another artist. This project could not be realised and even a second attempt to create the work failed. Since Malou Mathieu already had several drawings of Minett at this stage, she decided to proceed on her own.

The project has become very concrete over the last 12 months and since the beginning of the year the painter has been drawing intensively for her book.

Material for 170 pages needed

For the 170 pages, the artist Malou Mathieu obviously needs a lot of drawings. The final publication will contain about 400 images, of which about 250 are larger ones and a whole series of smaller drawings.

Publication in spring 2022

About half of the drawings have been completed and time is pressing, as the book should, even though it is not a project within the framework of Esch2022, be released more or less with the start of the cultural year at the Minett region.

In the end, Malou Mathieu is not totally realising her project on her own. Sue Scarano is helping her with the texts accompanying the images in the book, and the Imprimerie Heintz, which will be printing the work, is taking care of the layout.

We will certainly come back to this fascinating project as soon as the book is available in bookshops.
