Spring is the ideal time of year to go birdwatching and learn more about the diversity of bird species in the Minett UNESCO Biosphere.
Many bird species in Luxembourg are not doing well. The latest update of the Red List lists 14 bird species that have become extinct in Luxembourg and a large number of others that are threatened with extinction. The reasons for the decline in bird populations are the loss of habitats and the effects of climate change, which are becoming increasingly noticeable in our region.
However, there are glimmers of hope: following the restoration of the Alzette, the white stork now breeds every year in the Minett Biosphere Reserve, and the woodlark is making a comeback. Thanks to specific protection measures, the population of this symbolic bird of our biosphere reserve has stabilised. The woodlark is no longer considered ‘critically endangered’, but only ‘endangered’.
