Summer events in our biosphere

Minett Biosphere has a lot to offer visitors during the second half of the summer holidays. Until mid-September, when school starts again, there are plenty of things to do.

Open-air cinema

Until the end of the summer, three municipalities in the Minett Biosphere are organising open-air cinema events.

The town of Esch invites you to watch a film in the Galgeberg park every evening from 22 to 25 August at 21.00. Around 100 deckchairs and blankets will be available for the audience. You just have to get there early enough to take advantage of them. On Friday 23 and Saturday 24 August, there will be an open-air cinema on the football pitch in Schifflange, with screenings starting at 20.30. The castle of Sassenheim will provide a spectacular backdrop for the open air cinema in this locality. On four evenings, current films will be shown in the garden of this historic 18th century building, starting at 20.30. The first film will be shown on 5 September.

Experience nature in the biosphere reserve

The nature of the Minett Biosphere, which has reclaimed the former mining areas along the French border over the last 50 years, is spectacular and unique in Luxembourg. August and September are the perfect months to discover it, alone or in a group.

On 20 August, the city of Dudelange invites you to discover the orchard “am Weierchen” in the district of Budersberg. The programme includes the discovery of the 2 hectare orchard with its 88 fruit trees. It also explains the ecological functions of an orchard and how animals actively use it as a habitat.

One of the major tourist development projects in our region is the Minett Trail, designed and built as part of the region’s candidacy for a biosphere reserve. The stage from Differdange to Pétange, passing through Lasauvage, Fond-de-Gras and the Giele Botter nature reserve, is 16 kilometres long and is certainly not the easiest walk in the Minett, but it offers spectacular impressions of the industrial heritage and natural wealth of the Minett region. This guided walk is offered on 7 September. The following Saturday, VisitMinett offers a 37-kilometre mountain bike tour. The route goes through Lallengerbierg and Brucherbierg. An experienced guide will lead the group through one of the most spectacular mountain bike trails in Luxembourg.

Events for the whole family

On the weekend of 23 and 24 August, it is worth making a trip to Käerjeng. For two days, everything revolves around Playmobil. The toy launched by Hans Beck exactly 50 years ago still delights children and adults today.

Pétange was the first commune in Luxembourg to be liberated by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. This is celebrated here every year. In honour of the 80th anniversary of the liberation, a big festival with a programme for everyone and free entrance will take place from 6 to 9 September this year. The following weekend, 14 and 15 September, you can take a trip back to the Middle Ages in Budersberg. For two days, the district of Düdelingen is transformed into a medieval marketplace with stalls, performances and thousands of people, many of them dressed in medieval costume.
