On Wednesday, 5 February, the Interreg project “Cool Neighbourhoods”, involving the Minett UNESCO Biosphere and the city of Differdange, was presented to the Children’s Municipal Council.
During this presentation, given by employees of the Differdange Environmental Service, the children learnt what this project is all about. 13 partners from Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg are implementing a total of nine projects that aim to do something concrete about the heat and the physical strain that can be caused by high temperatures.
The project in Differdange is about doing something about the heat in the schoolyard of the boys’ school in the centre of the town. The children learned about the role of the green wall that will be built in the schoolyard.
The children have already identified this problem and have written a letter to the local council asking for more trees and shade in the schoolyard. They also made suggestions on how to make other children and adults aware and interested in the issue. One of the children’s ideas was to raise awareness, possibly by creating and displaying posters or information boards in the school playground and other places in the community.
