L’action humanitaire de l’Athénée, one of the UNESCO schools in Luxembourg, invites you this Thursday 20 May at 6 p.m. to participate in a conference on the UNESCO programme “Man and the Biosphere”, launched in 1971 and in which the “Minett UNESCO Biosphere” has become a member since October 2020. This biosphere reserve covers the entire territory of the 11 municipalities that work together in the Syndicat Pro-Sud.

The evening’s programme begins with an introduction by Simone Beck, President of the Luxembourg Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, on the subject of biosphere reserves operating under the UNESCO label “Man and the Biosphere”. In these more than 700 areas, which can be found all over the world, not only nature and biodiversity are preserved and protected, but also the inhabitants of these biosphere reserves are made aware of sustainable development and transition.
In the second part of the conference, the head of the “Minett UNESCO Biosphere”, Gaëlle Tavernier, will present the first region in Luxembourg to have received the biosphere label. She will give an overview of the biodiversity of southern Luxembourg and explain how the Minett UNESCO Biosphere will develop in the coming years.
The conference will be concluded by the students of the EDULINK elective course of the Athenaeum, who will present their UNESCO partner region, the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, near Cape Town in South Africa. Anyone interested in attending this conference can register by e-mail.
