Bëschbotz in the Minett Biosphere

Littering is a phenomenon that permanently burdens the natural spaces in Luxembourg, including in the Minett UNESCO Biosphere. In 2015, every resident of the Grand Duchy threw an average of 1.6 kilos of rubbish into nature per year.

Nearly 30% of the litter that is illegally discarded is made of metal, with beer cans and energy drink cans making up the majority of metallic waste. It is therefore all the more important that virtually all municipalities in the Minett UNESCO Biosphere get involved and, together with their residents, go out on a voluntary basis in spring to collect litter from nature.

In March, it’s forest clean-up on Saturdays

The kick-off of the big clean-up in our region is on 14 March. On that day, the forests in the municipalities of Sanem, Bettembourg, Kayl-Tétange, Mondercange and Esch-sur-Alzette will be cleaned, and all municipalities will offer volunteers a warm soup at the end of the clean-up.

Bettembourg – There are two starting points here

Kayl-Tétange – From the municipal workshop into the nature conservation zones

Mondercange – Start in Mondercange itself or at the Cultural Centre “Beim Nëssert”

Esch-sur-Alzette – The meeting point is as always at the Town Hall Square

On Saturday, 21 March, not only does spring begin, but that is also when the big forest clean-up takes place in the municipalities of Käerjeng, Schifflange and Differdange.

The clean-up activities conclude on Saturday, 28 March. The municipality of Pétange invites everyone on that day to its “Cure for Nature”, which, as every year, starts at the municipal workshop “an der Léier”.

A few details for a successful forest clean-up

All municipalities provide materials with which the forest and nature can be cleaned. These include bags for collecting litter and tools for picking it up.

Do remember, however, that if you want to take part in the forest clean-up, you should dress appropriately for the weather. For walking through a forest, sturdy shoes are always an advantage, and when collecting litter, gloves are recommended for hygiene reasons, and children should be accompanied by an adult.

Finally, it should be mentioned that every municipality offers those who participated in the clean-up a small snack at the end of the walk. To ensure that the individual services in the municipalities can plan the catering properly, it is important to register in good time with the municipality where you want to help collect litter from the forests.

The Minett UNESCO Biosphere already thanks everyone who is getting involved for a cleaner nature in Luxembourg’s unique biosphere reserve.
