The 22nd of May of each year is the International Day for Biological Diversity.
In 2001, the United Nations moved the date to May, commemorating May 22nd 1992. On this day, the Convention on Biological Diversity was officially adopted. The CBD became effective on 29 December 1993.
The objectives of the Convention are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable management of natural resources and the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilisation of genetic resources.
This year’s International Biodiversity Day is celebrated under the slogan: “We’re part of the solution”.
UNESCO’s intersectoral strategy for biodiversity is based on three pillars: restoring the relationship between people and nature and regenerating ecosystems; maintaining the harmony of our ecosystems; and empowering youth. UNESCO-designated sites (1,121 World Heritage Sites, 714 Biosphere Reserves and 161 Global Geoparks) are the backbone of this strategy. They cover 6% of the Earth’s landmass and are key areas where people learn to live in harmony with other living species and where experiences are shared for the benefit of all.
