The Minett UNESCO Biosphere tells the story of a region in transition. What was once a landscape shaped by iron ore mining and the rise of Luxembourg’s steel industry is now home to some of the country’s most valuable natural areas. This unique combination of industrial heritage and biodiversity makes the region an exceptional outdoor learning environment.
In partnership with IFEN, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere is therefore offering two new training courses for teachers. The first focuses on the outstanding biodiversity of former open-pit mining areas. Participants explore dry grasslands, rocky habitats and forests, discover rare plant and animal species, and receive practical ideas for nature-based educational activities with their classes.
The second course explores the industrial history of southern Luxembourg, from the discovery of the “Minette” iron ore to the transformation of former industrial sites such as Belval. A visit to the National Mining Museum in Rumelange provides direct insight into the history of mining in the region.
Together, these courses demonstrate how closely landscape, society and nature are interconnected. They provide valuable background knowledge, deepen understanding of the region’s unique character and support teachers in bringing the history and natural heritage of their local environment into the classroom.
