The CALAMINE exhibition is the culmination of a research and collective creation residency led by students from the ZÀD – ZONE À DESSINS studio at the École Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine – Metz campus, at the Bridderhaus.

Supervised by artist and teacher François Génot, the ZÀD workshop develops a collective artistic project each year in collaboration with a new partner. For the 2025–2026 edition, the Bridderhaus has become the focal point of this initiative, hosting a residency in the heart of southern Luxembourg, a region marked by a rich industrial and steel-making history, and now undergoing social, urban and ecological transformation.

From ECHO.lu

In metallurgy, calamine is a deposit of iron oxide formed on the surface of steel subjected to very high temperatures.

Drawing on this concept, the multidisciplinary works examine the traces left by the industrial and steel-making era that shaped the Esch-sur-Alzette valley and, more broadly, the Greater Region. What if this history had deposited, in both landscapes and bodies, layers of unstable, volatile narratives, destined to be reactivated in times to come?

As they immersed themselves in the area, the students explored these intertwined layers: buried narratives, fragmented memories, and tangible and intangible legacies. They walked the red earth, stood at the thresholds of these hidden histories, met the local people and residents, experienced its forms of multiculturalism, and examined the tangible consequences of industrial progress. In a region where industrial waste forms the foundations of the present, collective intelligence, sharing and attention to stories become acts of care, even of healing.

An exhibition opening open to the public will take place on 10 April 2026 at 6.30 pm.

A special public day will unveil the living aspect of the research process through a programme of events and performances on Sunday 12 April from 11am to 6pm. This publication, conceived, written and laid out by the students, builds on the ideas, discussions and approaches developed during the residency.
