Engaging Young Minds: Hands-On Learning at Giele Botter

In April, the project moved from the classroom to the field with an enriching trip to the Giele Botter Nature Reserve, a key site within the Minett UNESCO Biosphere.

This excursion offered the students a tangible connection to the concepts discussed during the March session. Walking through the unique landscapes shaped by both geological processes and historical mining activities, the pupils witnessed firsthand the interplay between human intervention and natural recovery.

The learning experiences during this field trip were multifaceted. Students observed the diverse ecosystems discussed in the presentation they had followed in March, from dry grasslands maintained by Ardennes Red sheep to wet meadows hosting rare species like the bluethroat bird and the great crested newt. They learned about conservation challenges, such as the impact of rain on butterfly-dependent orchids like the pyramidal orchid, and the importance of microclimates for species survival. The reserve’s industrial past was evident in the subsided basins now colonized by water plants and animals, illustrating nature’s resilience post-mining.

The outcomes of this field trip were profound. Pupils gained a deeper appreciation for biodiversity’s role in ecosystem resilience, understanding how diverse species protect against pests and diseases. They also recognized the cultural significance of preserving industrial heritage alongside natural habitats. This hands-on experience constituted a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical observation.
