World Water Day 2022

Groundwater: making the invisible visible

The theme of World Water Day 2022 is groundwater. The campaign is entitled “Groundwater: making the invisible visible”. UN-Water sets the theme for the Day each year. Groundwater is the theme for 2022.

Three decades since the idea of World Water Day

In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) recommended that an international day be dedicated to freshwater resources. On 22 March 1993 the first World Water Day took place.

To strengthen global action, the General Assembly proclaimed the “International Decade for Action “Water for Life” (2005-2015)” and the current “International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018-2028)“.

It provides an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and partnerships at all levels to contribute to the achievement of internationally agreed water-related goals and targets, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

What happens on World Water Day?

In the run-up to the 22nd of March, World Water Day events are organised by individuals and organisations participating in the global public campaign launched a few months in advance by UN-Water on www.worldwaterday.org and on social networks.

On the same day, the UN World Water Development Report is published. It focuses on the same theme as the campaign and makes recommendations for decision-makers.

Groundwater – A hidden treasure

Groundwater is invisible, but its influence is visible everywhere.

Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that is essential for life. In the driest parts of the world, it can be the only water resource available.

Almost all of the world’s freshwater is found underground and is used for drinking water, sanitation, agriculture, industry and ecosystems.

We often overuse and pollute groundwater and sometimes don’t know how much water is under our feet.

Groundwater will play a key role in adapting to climate change. We must work together to manage this precious resource sustainably.

Groundwater may be hidden, but it should not be forgotten.
