Launch of the COPIL Natura-2000 “LIAS-Uelzechtdall”

On September 17, 2025, the Natura 2000 “LIAS – Uelzechtdall” steering committee (COPIL) was inaugurated by Serge Wilmes, Minister for the Environment.

This is the eighth and final committee to be established in Luxembourg, thus completing the governance for the management of Natura 2000 areas, which cover 28.07% of the national territory.

The objective of these committees is to reconcile nature protection with human activities, ensuring the effective implementation of management plans through the collaboration of all stakeholders: ministries, municipalities, syndicates, farmers, and nature protection associations.

Second COPIL within the Minett UNESCO Biosphere territory

Luxembourg’s only biosphere reserve is a founding member of this new “LIAS – Uelzechtdall” COPIL. This is the second steering committee in which the reserve is officially represented, following its participation in the “Minetter Dagebaugebidder” COPIL. This dual representation strengthens its role in the protection and sustainable management of natural habitats, both in its central southern territory and in the “LIAS – Uelzechtdall” transition region.

Located between Luxembourg City and the Minett region, the “LIAS – Uelzechtdall” region takes its name from its geological layers. Marked by the Alzette valley and its tributaries, it hosts alluvial plains essential for birdlife, of which the white stork is an emblematic species. The concerted management of this territory—which is predominantly agricultural and forested with a high proportion of private land—is therefore crucial for preserving the rich biodiversity present in the Minett UNESCO Biosphere.
