Le Salon de Helen Buchholtz
We don’t know the Salon that Helen Buchholtz could have held. So, we reinvent it, we reinterpret it by highlighting this colourful character, her music, her family and its activities, her entourage, her time, her hometown of Esch-sur-Alzette and the European context.
“Le Salon de Helen Buchholtz” will offer a variety of events, including concerts, readings, conferences, screenings, educational workshops, master classes, an exhibition and guided tours in an unexpected setting that will reflect the spirit of the Salon. The project will take place from September 22, 2022 to December 22, 2022 at the Bridderhaus in Esch-sur-Alzette as part of Esch2022 – European Capital of Culture.
Helen Buchholtz (1877 – 1953) was born in Esch-sur-Alzette. Her father, Daniel Buchholtz was the founder of a hardware store (1853) and a brewery (1894). Helen lived successively in Esch-sur-Alzette, Wiesbaden (D) and Luxembourg City. Throughout her life she composed music and left 138 works. It occupies a special place in the history of music of Luxembourg and Esch. She was co-owner of the Buchholtz Brewery. She had links with the musical and literary scene.
In the European spirit of Esch2022, the project wants to shed light on the life and work of the character of Helen Buchholtz while contextualizing this reality in relation to other countries, other times, or other social environments.
The main partners of the project are frEsch asbl (Porteur de projet), CID Fraen an Gender (Danielle Roster), MUGILUX, Centre National de Littérature (CNL), 100.7, Institute of History - uni.lu
